The 1080 and the 1070 are great performers, thanks to the overdue die shrink to 16nm. Performance per clock cycle is about the same as the Maxwell 900 series, but they've made Pascal stable at much higher frequencies, so they've cranked them way way up around 2GHz.
Unfortunately, they have really weird pricing, at least right now. Nvidia decided to mark up their reference design over the MSRP they set for board partners, instead of establishing a de facto price floor like normal. This so-called "Founders Edition" is literally nothing but a normal reference card, inferior to anything custom that the board partners are doing. As a result the board partners are not honoring the MSRP and are charging more for their cards, understandably, because they are better than the reference design, and there is nothing cheaper holding their prices down. Most of them are still under the Founder's Edition, but some are over it, and nothing custom is at or even near Nvidia's supposed MSRP. Making matters worse, because of the usual severe shortages at launch, retailers are frequently overcharging by hundreds on top of this. This will settle down as sufficient supply stabilizes over the next 1-2 months, but the mythical MSRP will likely persists because of how Nvidia marked up their in house card.
AMD's release next week is going to give a nice performance increase to lower and mid-level cards. Really good values. But they are not releasing anything to compete with the 1070 or 1080 until probably the end of the year at the earliest. So I'd expect the 1070 and 1080 to keep their inflated prices. FYI, the 1070 is essentially 980 Ti performance, which as Hackl knows, is enough to crush CLOD at 1920X1080/1200.

I thought having a top notch graphics card would help me with flying better. I doesn't. I still suck.

Brother, nobody sucks like I suck, and it's got more to do with the controller settings I need for accurate ground attack vs. air combat than it does with graphics. I have an AMD R9 390, a very nice card, but it doesn't help me fly one whit better. Baldur
