This is general info that may be of some use to you guys.
Every one who has flown with me is probably aware of the whistling mic problem I had. I tried everything I could think of from trying different headsets, changing jacks, playing with various settings in the control panel, all to no avail. Finally came to the conclusion that it was somewhere on the motherboard and that I couldn't fix it. My next option was to buy a sound card, but I didn't want to spend money on a sound card when the onboard sound was just fine except for the mic issue.
Just recently I stumbled on to the usb sound adapter! Apparently it's a thing for laptop skype users. Found it on Amazon. Lots of different manufacturers, and they are all fairly cheap. Less than $10 in most cases. Plugs right into a usb port. No software involved, just a little setup. I had to plug mic and headphones in to get the system to recognize it. The headset sound is not as high quality as onboard, but once the system recognized it, I was able to keep the mic on the adapter and split the headset off to the onboard jack.

Very strange problem. Glad you found a workaround to get the issue solved. And for only a few bucks, not bad at all.
