I've had a big problem with not being able to hear my guns (on certain planes) and sometimes not being able to hear any sort of sound when I'm getting shot, so I did some searching for a sound mod that would work for HSFX. I ended up finding "Jiver's Total Sound Mod" which some of you might want to try out. You can hear your guns and you can definitely hear when your plane is getting hit. It was mentioned that HSFX uses this guys gun sounds but at a lower level. Anyway, if you want to give it a shot go here: www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,16999.0.html Scroll down to the HSFX section and download the one that says "base mod package". Install with JGSME. So far I have not found any conflicts or issues with the current version of HSFX we are using. PS: If anyone knows of an even better sound mod, let me know!

I tried that when we were testing WOI 2. It was better in some regards, mainly gun volume, but flap and gear volume got really annoying to me. I think it depends on the specific plane though and how it's all balanced. I also had graphical issues when using it, I'd get stuck tracer streams just floating in air. I heard there was a fix for it since then, hopefully incorporated into the version you have.
