Is this a site that hacks FM / DM?

After doing quite a bit of reading, I see that "mods" are highly frowned upon in the community. I don't see the intent of this sound mod for cheating. I didn't see any mention of any of changes to the modeling. I certainly don't see any modeling difference as I'm still being downed with the same alarming frequency. It looks like it changes the default sound files for the various engines and weapons. I loaded it on a secondary installation and it works great. If it does alter the modeling , I don't think activating "God" mode in FS would be appreciated by anyone.

This is sort of the controversy at hand. These mods are not official, or even sanctioned in any way by the proper people. They are unauthorized hacks often using stolen sounds, so it's not the cleanest operation. It does, so I am told, make the game sound better. Also, it allows the human use of AI planes, by transplanting another plane's cockpit into it. This opens up a lot of very nice possibilities that much of the community has been clamoring for, for quite some time. The flip side is that it also allows the changing of default skins, flight and damage models, etc, by those with bad intentions. There are certain mod packs that exist which only give you the sounds and AI flyables, without touching the flight/damage models. These are in the process of being considered for use down the line, but that depends on a few things which haven't happened yet. For now, I'd recommend restraint in downloading or using these. I have not touched them, and don't plan to at this time.

Yeah, I see it does modify the ILFB.exe so I can see what your saying. But Man, the DB and Merlin engines sound so real and the MG42 and Cannons sound awesome! Also kind cool to fly the ME-210 and Hs-129!!! I can see there are some cheats on the site including a mirror mod for the F6F and P51. Though If I were flying back then, I'd get a makeup mirror and chewn gum......

I downloaded the one sanctioned for the bomber flight and it was ok. The sounds are awesome in the cockpit. However, if they go through any Doppler effects they sound pretty ridiculous. During the mission a P-47 dove on me at 750+ kph, it sounded like it was whistling and not a 2800 cubic inch radial. In this regard, Oleg's synth sound effects beat these sound mods in spades.
The newly flyable AI aircraft are suspect also. Their FM's were never intended to be used for flyable aircraft. So some of them are a bit "funny."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
From what I've read, the majority of people pro-mod are trying to better the game by fixing things they think are "wrong." In quotes because what I think may be wrong may not be what someone else thinks is wrong. I don't think the intent to cheat is one of their goals. However, it will create a non-uniform game because IL-2 was not designed or intended to be modified by anyone but the developer. So my 4.08 may be different than your 4.08. I may not intend to cheat, but since mine is slightly different it may exhibit questionable behavior.
However there are those that will use it to cheat, but I would say those are less than 5%.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The cons fall into three groups:
Chicken Little: This is the end of multiplayer and we will have to find something else to play till BOB:SOW is released and hope to all that is holy that that isn't cracked either: <sigh>. You've cost Oleg revenue and now SOW is doomed for sure.
Legality and Respect: It wasn't part of the EULA and against the developer's wishes that this game be modded. Shame on all of you and you should all go to jail for this atrocity that you have committed or enabled. How could you do this to Oleg who has given us so much, you're all ingrates.
You don't know what you're doing: The game was not intended to be moded, you are messing with things that you don't know what ill effects it may have. How much testing are you doing with these new mods?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I fall more or less into the 3rd group. The software was not designed to have people other than the developers mess with it. When things are changed it may effect something entirely different. For example, maybe you make the Fw-189 flyable, but now the P-39 engine doesn't overheat. I deal with a lot of software in my job, both writing it and using it. Even if you know whats going on very strange things can happen if you change stuff in ways that weren't meant to be changed. Since they don't have the source code and not know how the internals work, every change is playing roulette with a memory leaks, faults graphics corruption, etc ...
To me this seems like using a crow bar to open your car door. Sure it gets the door open, but a key causes a lot less problems and damage.
After flying with the mod the other night for a bit, its obvious that it is unpolished and a bastardization. Sound files are inconsistent and do not mesh with the world. New aircraft use existing cockpits of aircraft that are nothing like what they are in real life. And the FM's of these are much to be desired. Its an interesting distraction, but any serious flying I will fly un-moded because at least there there will be no surprises.
Great, another potential "Combat Flight Simulator". I hated the fact that, in that game whenever I was shot down, I always asked myself "Is that guy cheating?". I sincerely hope I don't have to start asking that question in Forgotten Skies.
