I experimented with having IL2 run at the same resolution as my desktop (1680x1050) in hopes of getting better visibility in the game. I also have a wide screen monitor.
It seems in the game even though I have the resolution in the conf file changed to my desktop resolution, the game displays the screen with black bars on either side.
Any idea how to fix this ?

Copy and paste this into the first section of your conf.ini:
[window] width=1680 height=1050 ColourBits=32 DepthBits=24 StencilBits=8 ChangeScreenRes=1 FullScreen=1 DrawIfNotFocused=0 EnableResize=0 EnableClose=0 SaveAspect=0 Use3Renders=0

Thanks Heiden. I did some checking online and found that this is a common issue with IL2 and aspect ratios.
I also found out that the black lines are only in the menus, the in game flying is wide screen.
The only difference I had between my conf and yours was "EnableClose". I looked online and could not find a definition for this line. Any ideas what it deals with ?

Yeah, doing what Heiden posted gives you a properly proportioned widescreen picture to your monitor resolution while flying, but it doesn't actually give you more visibility. In fact it gives you less. By making the image bigger so that it reaches the left and right sides, you actually get the normal 4:3 ratio top and bottom cut off. Out of game, in the GUI or FMB you get side bars along the default 4:3 image, since it wouldn't be functional to have the screen stretched out like when flying.
There is some mod that redoes the GUI and FMB and fills the screen fully left/right, using modded GUI images, without stretching it up/down, but it is CRT=2 sensitive. There is also some other mod, much more complicated I think, that does allow you to expand your in cockpit FOV past default (I think 90 degrees horizontal). But if you go much farther than that it makes the cockpit too small and you get a noticeable fisheye effect.
