Assuming no actual defects, and proper setup, it should look really, really good in terms of image quality for many things. I'm certainly interested in how well it handles head movement when flying. That's the biggest risk with that one. Dots slightly darker, and planes more defined should help with ID. Going from 24 to 32 is going to be impressive.

It's good to see they are pushing the quantum dot tech into more models to help with the color gamut a bit. I don't actually know if it plays a part in the CFG70 series' pixel response, but I really hope it does. Those are the first VA types that seem to not have response issues. Whatever Samsung did to figure that out, they need to keep doing it. They mention some of those upcoming models are "for gamers", but until we see not only actual specs, but professional reviews, that's just marketing. We've seen the 4ms spec on some VAs before, but there are still issues with the darker transitions. The CH711 with a 31.5 inch option at 1440, does specify 3000:1 which tells us it's VA. But will it have the speed of the CFG70? That would be a great upgrade if you have a top shelf card, and dots wouldn't be too small at that size. 4K/UHD I think is out of reach right now for CLOD, no matter what card. And dots would be so tiny unless you went with a 40-50 inch TV.

Just FYI, if you find something about modifying an rcu file to help with dots, all that does is set the game up to automatically add the 'mp_dotrange DOT 25' line when the game loads. This could be helpful if you play singleplayer and don't want to type it into the console every time. But with multiplayer, that setting is server controlled, so that rcu file will do nothing for dots when online. ATAG, SOW, and GS all have it on DOT 25 anyway. They're already maxed out.

Good to hear you're liking it so far. Too bad about the dot sizes with the finer resolution. That's always going to bite us when looking for sharper image quality with this game. I tried that contact spotting mission last night with Hackl, and I'm getting 11 clearly, another 3 barely. Can't see the last 2, and I'm not sure how anyone can because they are at 15km and 16km. The default DOT setting is 14km, so they shouldn't even be drawn. When I set DOT to 25, which is what most servers run, I get all 16 without issue. Of course it helps to know where to look.

Nice buy, looks like a real good one Baldur. Have you tried it at the native 1440? Sharper image, but wondering if dots are too small. Is there a 75Hz option as I see 50~75Hz mentioned for that model. More than a few monitors have that spec. Some say they can get 75Hz, others say their settings max at 60Hz. Just curious because I might pick up one in the future with that. For Asus, make sure to set that Trace Free setting as high until you see color inverted motion artifacts. On most (but not all) Asus monitors, Trace Free 60 is the best balance of pixel overdrive. If there is anything on there called Vivid Pixel (on new Asus monitors) turn it off. Looking forward to hearing how it performs after a few nights of flying.

My issue was that I was launching the game from Steam. A while back I tried just launching the launcher.exe but it didn't work, so I figured, I guess I have to use Steam to launch it. Apparently, you can launch the launcher.exe directly, but you have to have Steam open. That works and I don't get prompted with the message about allowing changes.

I'm still getting the Windows question about allowing the program to make changes every time I launch from Steam. Just have to say NO every time.

The 1080 and the 1070 are great performers, thanks to the overdue die shrink to 16nm. Performance per clock cycle is about the same as the Maxwell 900 series, but they've made Pascal stable at much higher frequencies, so they've cranked them way way up around 2GHz.
Unfortunately, they have really weird pricing, at least right now. Nvidia decided to mark up their reference design over the MSRP they set for board partners, instead of establishing a de facto price floor like normal. This so-called "Founders Edition" is literally nothing but a normal reference card, inferior to anything custom that the board partners are doing. As a result the board partners are not honoring the MSRP and are charging more for their cards, understandably, because they are better than the reference design, and there is nothing cheaper holding their prices down. Most of them are still under the Founder's Edition, but some are over it, and nothing custom is at or even near Nvidia's supposed MSRP. Making matters worse, because of the usual severe shortages at launch, retailers are frequently overcharging by hundreds on top of this. This will settle down as sufficient supply stabilizes over the next 1-2 months, but the mythical MSRP will likely persists because of how Nvidia marked up their in house card.
AMD's release next week is going to give a nice performance increase to lower and mid-level cards. Really good values. But they are not releasing anything to compete with the 1070 or 1080 until probably the end of the year at the earliest. So I'd expect the 1070 and 1080 to keep their inflated prices. FYI, the 1070 is essentially 980 Ti performance, which as Hackl knows, is enough to crush CLOD at 1920X1080/1200.

The more I'm messing with the sharpen filter, it seems there are more trade-offs than better or worse. I can get a setting that brings out a dot a bit more, but when it's a closing bandit at maybe 1-1.5km, the same settings helps mask it compared to default. It just seems to depend on if it's a dot, or a tiny airplane (like 5 pixels), against the sky vs against the ground/water.
The lack of pre-rendered AA from the game does slightly hurt the shape of distant planes for ID purposes. You lose some of the simulated detail of tapered and curved edges that distinguish the planes. So again, a trade-off for having slightly darker distant dots. Not sure if it's worth it yet.

I'm going back and testing with SweetFX for this. As you has said, turning the in game AA off does help a bit. But I really don't want to run with no AA. SweetFX actually has a nice SMAA that works well in place of the game's system that doesn't hurt dots quite as much. I'm just trying to redo my sharpness filter to work with the game's AA turned off. Not thrilled with anything yet.

My own engine sounds don't change noticeably when I open/close the canopy. But all the other sounds like wind, aircraft, flak, and sirens become much more audible.

You were having more TS problems on Monday when we met. I got your PM about planning to make Wednesday, but then also saw you posted later saying you lost all sound with the new video card, so I knew that plan had changed. We flew on Wednesday (oddly light night for ATAG). I'm just waiting for the good news about your sound, and I just saw your PM from a couple hours ago about getting it all fixed. I'll just reply here instead of there. As far as I can say, my next open night is Monday. How about 9pm ET?

I'm in California. But now it looks like I will be free tonight (Thursday) after all, probably busy Saturday, and will have to be gone on Sunday. If it's not too short notice at this point, I'd prefer to meet and fly tonight, 9:30pm ET. If not, let's try for Friday, same time. Sorry for the schedule weirdness.

Depends on how late is too late for you. I would like to plan for about 2 hours, mostly flying. So go back about 2 hours from when your time will be up and I should be able to make that.

It turns out that I won't have to miss Wednesday after all, but what I have to do got pushed to Thursday or even Friday. So I'll be on Wednesday for our normal night (probably just free fighting on ATAG), but on Thursday Baldur I can't take you through the first training flights. Friday is likely not open either, so I'm thinking Saturday is my next chance to start you on the procedures and eventual test requirements and drills. How is Saturday night for you?

As best as I can tell, in summary, it is a cross Channel style scenario, relatively balanced, but not symmetrically. So you have bombing raids coming and going on both sides of the Channel. Aircraft and fuel are finite resources, both produced at unique sites in a sector which then automatically support operations at local airfields. Both can be transferred to airfields in other sectors as needed. These production and fuel sites are the strategic targets for bomber raids. There is some sort of radar to help track these raids and set up intercepts. If a sector's fuel is all knocked out, the local airfields are shut down. By rule, bomber flights must be at least 3 people, unless you are just ferrying. Planes that return to an operational airfield, even with damage, are immediately repaired and available. Planes that crash land away from operational airfields are recovered as damaged and are available next mission. Planes destroyed are just gone. Better fighters and especially bombers are more expensive to produce. There's no ground war or territory exchange.
So I'd anticipate mission types kind of like SOW used to be, with Allied bomber raids to intercept. And with only a single 4 hour mission (for our evening times), probably a much better chance of more people when we are online.

ATAG and No.401 Squadron have been running a campaign called War Machine for a couple months that I'd like us to check out. I was flying with No.401_Wolverine on ATAG Wednesday night and he said they're looking for Blue pilots. It doesn't require a heavy commitment, which is great for where our squad schedule is going very soon with GS. They run a single mission on Saturdays for 4 hours, starting at 8pm ET. It looks like they are in the middle of trying to add a European timed mission earlier in the day that will immediately precede the original North American time slot. It looks like they are postponing this Saturday's mission until they get the new double mission schedule worked out for next week. If you guys are available on Saturday evening, let's give this a try. I think it looks fun. The first 2 posts in this thread: theairtacticalassaultgroup.com/forum/showthread.php?t=21166 give an explanation of the campaign design. So starting not this Saturday, but next, who thinks they can drop in for a few hours?

Hey Baldur, glad to hear you're looking to start flying again. CLOD is a different beast from the old IL-2. Plenty of that experience will transition over, but enough is new and/or much more difficult. In the fun sort of way though. Be prepared to work through the training process. We'll talk more when we can meet on TS and go through the whole orientation. Let me know what time(s) will work for you this week and we can set a meeting time.

Not bad looking at all. I didn't know they were planning to do tanks for it. Always good to see the 190.
