Luckily I held on to that old screwed up 9700. It was a major pain, but I was able to get the fan/heatsink off of it, and then removed the broken one from my good card. The old fan/heatsink is now on the new card, and it appears so far that the fan is working fine. Haven't done any lengthy 3D playing yet though, but it is running fast, smooth, and constant, so I don't anticipate any problems. Oddly enough, although both cards were the exact same model, and manufactured by ATI, not a contract company like Sapphire, the fans were different. The old working one has many smaller blades, and the newer broken one had fewer bigger blades. I don't know if that has anything to do with it wearing out so fast, but you'd think that identical cards should have identical parts, no?

If it doesn't have that type of AA, would it have another kind, or just none at all? Because if it doens't have any, I'd think it would look just like it does now as far as AA goes. I wasn't aware that you could get high end cards that don't offer typical AA capability.

As it says, we're willing to train anyone who is willing to learn. If you commit the time to it and are serious about improving and becoming a member of the team, you'll get all the help you need. If you can't land yet, then we'll start there and work up. Basics first. Just be sure you come in with a realistic time frame in mind. You won't be an ace of the sky in a few weeks, or even a few months. Especially when you start from the beginning, being a good virtual combat pilot takes a lot of time and practice. It's a long, gradual process that is never complete. More importantly though, being a valuable member of the Staffel can take considerably less time, if you have the basics down. So we do that before we do anything else. Staffel "off" nights are Monday, Thursday, and Saturday. We can use those nights to work with you until you're up to speed enough to fly with the Staffel on Wednesday's training. Let me know what days and times work for you and we can get started as soon as you'd like. Just to confirm, are you up to version 4.08m?

Don't worry about it Bear. Take care of that arm and all the rest. I'm glad to hear your one armed drive went okay. We'll be here when you get back.

Remember that scene from Office Space where they take the computer equipment off to the side of the road and destroy it with a bat? Well, I'm really close to doing that. As stated earlier, the new video card functioned without distortions in CoD, but it froze up after a few minutes of playing. My optical drive, even after switching plugs is not recognized at all, and AEP is not recognized by old external CD drive. That was a few days ago. Last night I had my computer on Stand By when I went to bed. Some time during the night the keyboard was stepped on by a cat I assume because when I got up it was running. I moved the mouse to wake up the screen and it is sitting on the blue user select screen except it is COMPLETELY DISTORTED! I shut down, have to go to school. Get home turn it on and there's a little distortion on the Dell screen, the Windows loading screen it shifted a couple inched to the left, and the user select screen and desktop is all distorted just like it was when this whole thing started a month and a half ago, except there is about twice as much distortion. Also in the clear spots between the bands whatever is there is screwed up too, so I cannot really see to do anything at all, just sorta poke around and guess. I opened the case up again, switched another plug to the optical drive from a different cord bundle, incase the whole thing was bad, and resecured the 9800 card. Plugged everything back in, turned it on and same ole same ole. No optical drive, and can't see a freaking thing. I guess that's what I get for a $400 upgrade. The distortions are worse than they ever were, and now I don't have an optical drive. PERFECT!

Thanks Shrike, things kinda got knocked out there, but it is up and usable with 1 channel. That's all we need for tonight, so we'll be on our regular server then, not COT.

As long as Ventrilo is working we'll use that. Don't get rid of TS or anything though. It will be the emergency back up and also might be needed if we have to join comms that aren't ours. By the way Shrike has Ventrilo back up.

For those who haven't heard yet, the newest version of HL, 3.9.111, no longer allows connecting to a server by getting info on a player already in the server, and hitting Enter. If you are late to an FS mission, or there simply aren't enough slots for everyone, those left outside must join through the game with the server's IP. But I'd suggest simply staying with version 3.8.101. It still works just fine, and does not make you update to the latest version. If you're still on this version, stay there. If you've already gone up to 3.9.111 and don't have the installer for 3.8.101, find someone who still has the installer for that version and go back to it. You can't overwrite the new files with the old ones, so you'll have to install it into a new folder. Thanks to Specter for helping me out on this.

Yes torque is a whole FM thing, not just 190. P-38 with counter-rotating props has a noticable advantage from this. And yes, I'm referring to the 109's horrible elevator stiffness at high speed.

If you're coming straight from 3.04m, yeah, there's a lot that is different. For one, much more torque, although it was a bit more in the leaked 4.00m. Inertia is increased as well, so everything isn't as crisp, the plane moves kinda mushy and not precise. The torque makes you go strong right rudder on takeoff, be careful. Torque gets worse with the combination of high RPM and low speed. That is a VERY unscientific way of looking at it, but it works. At high RPM, it begins to balance out around 450 or so. Getting slow in turns be careful, it will fight you to roll over left, and it will win if you're not paying attention. Roll rates are all slower. P-51 is faster, 190 is slower, 109 elevator F-K actually works now. Oh and I almost forgot. THE 20s RIP THINGS TO SHREDS NOW!! ;D

It was good to talk with you Krafft. When we got short on time, I kind of sped through that last part, just to get you pointed in the right direction. I know I was dumping tons of info on you there. That always happens at the start. We'll go over more stuff in more detail when we have time, and it'll sink in soon enough. I look forward to getting you in the cockpit and seeing where we need to pick up at.

A-4,5,6,8 are all a bit slower. A-9, D-9 the same. The A-5 1.65ata is just as fast as the A-8, 581. Tempest "only" does 600. Spit 25lb 566. Mossie 547. The poor P-38J got knocked down to 560, but the Ls are the same.

Cool stuff. The Ju 88A should prove to be quite valuable. And those Macchis will be a treat to fly. I hope the modeling does them justice. A Spit IX at 25lb boost is nasty. If they model that to test specs, it will run side by side with the current P-51B/C on the deck. That means no speed advantage for the A-5/6/8. It will outclimb its old self by almost 1,000ft/min. And it already outturns and out-E conserves us by miles. And you thought you saw a lot of Spitfires before! Should make things interesting. Nevermind that it saw no more than token use until November 1944, I'm sure they'll have them all over the place.

If you do update, make sure to have a copy of the 4.01m folder before doing so.
As for first impressions, planes seem very unstable when centering input. The roll of the 190 feels faster to me. Shooting is significantly harder because of the wandering around the center. It's like the aircraft's axes are on springs and they boing around. Just try this out. Fly straight and level, then give a quick downstick push and let it go. Watch as the aircraft doesn't settle back up quickly like in 4.01m, it goes up, left, right, down, up, right left, and then settles. It's just all over the place when you try to make little quick adjustments close to center. And that is how you shoot. Much tougher. Also, head movement in the cockpit seems increased.
